Berny Carberol

Berny Carberol from Argentina is one of the top conditioning/fitness trainers on professional tour. He’s been involved in professional tennis as conditioning coach for last 16 years and worked with top players such as Rainer Schuettler, Janko Tipsarevic, Nicolas Massu, Benjamin Becker, Bernard Tomic, Andrea Petkovic, Yen-Hsun Lu, Sergiy Stakhovsky , Michael Berrer, Dusan Lajovic , Ricardas Berankis, Pablo Cuevas, Aljaz Bedene, Sergio Roitman and others.

Why fitness coach? Was it a passion for sport or particularly for tennis? What would you recommend to other trainers trying to become fitness coaches or physio’s on tour?

BC: I grew up playing tennis. I wanted to be good, but when I was 17 results did not come as expected so I decided to study. My parents are both fitness coaches, so I did the same. The first good player I worked with was Sergio Roitman from Argentina. While we worked together he has improved his ATP ranking from 254 to 62 in just 14 months.

Fitness coach on ATP? Well, I recommend observing and learning from the best, study hard and put a lot of passion in what they do.

After seeing so many players on tour on and off the court which attributes do you think they all (the best ones) share. What makes them different from lets say lower ranked players? Is that persistence, self discipline, mental strength... what difference do you see?

BC: Definitely the discipline. The best players’ fitness level is at another level. Thanks to the good / fluent technique and being economical with their movement the top players spend less energy than the rest. They are persistent in what they do, so it’s only a question of time to break the opponent down.

What would you recommend to players trying to break through / become the best?

BC: Persistence is very important, do the right things even if the results are not coming right away. Professionalism and responsibility for your actions are also important. Remember, that only you are a creator of your own future. The key to success is to be ready to fail and then stand up again. I always say, that you need to be 100% ready to maybe have the chance!!
