Parenting in tennis

SOCIAL FACTORS INFLUENCING TENNIS PLAYER

This time we will talk about the social influences on the development and performance of a tennis player: Every coach must accept the fact that everything is closely interconnected with the parents of the player they are coaching. They are simply the most important part of every tennis player’s development. Supporting their children-player mentally, morally, financially and by investing so much of their time is not an easy task for any parent. It is an uneasy journey. To somewhat prevent the coming complications should every parent be well prepared by getting only the best education. Parents need to know what are they going in to, what are their optoins and mainly about what it takes to coach and parent the heatlhy way. Tennis parents should understand at least to some level about what are their children going through physically and mentally when training and performing.

FAMILY / FRIENDS / SURROUNDING PEOPLE

Watching others, family, friends and role models and learning from their behavior and experiences affects the way a player performs and behaves on a daily basis. This learning of accepted behaviors, values, rights and wrongs is known as socialization. Family and especially parents play a huge part in tennis players’ development. Parents can be a helpful coach but can and very often do destroy the career of their children-player. Since tennis parents have it all in their hands, every decision they make is so crucial for the future of their child. Second biggest factor influencing players’ growth is his/her love partner / partners, husband or wife. Friends and other family members are also to be considered if it comes to distractions.

PERSONAL VALUES / POSITIVE THINKING / SELF TALK

And once again, watching others affects the way a player performs and behaves on a daily basis. This learning of accepted behaviors, values, rights and wrongs from our family and especially parents plays a huge role in building players attitude. A winning attitude is a key ingredient that all athletes need in order to perform their best. What a player thinks and says to himself shapes his attitude and affects performance. Negative self-talk can lead to poor performance. Positive self-talk and positive feelings can on the other hand stimulate player to great performances and the satisfaction of accomplishment. It can be the difference between first and second place.
